My Garden

My parents will tell you that when I was a child, I could not be put on the grass nor would I play in the dirt.  I was scared of anything that crawled or wiggled.  But, as an adult,  I loved roses.  And carnations. And lavender.  My husband would give me flowers for every holiday.  When I had Lindsay, he sent 12 dozen pink carnations to the hospital.  Later, my boyfriends knew what time it was.  Artis Camon and Jon Winge were the best, always catering to my passion.  Well, around 2003, I decided that while I wanted a man in my life, I didn't want one in my house.  So I started having roses delivered to myself every two weeks.  Then my father came to visit me and brought back to life one lonely hot pink rose bush that came with the house.  He tried to convince me that I could grow my own roses with all of the yard that I had around my home.  Upon his return to Washington, DC, he had five rose bushes sent to me from Wayside Gardens: two red Mr. Lincolns, one Peace, and two Just Joeys.  I knew that those roses were not cheap so I bought some Miracle-Gro to break up that Georgia clay in my yard and planted those rose bushes.  It was hard on me since I was used to getting my nails done every 2 weeks.  But, about 6 weeks later, I saw the first benefits of my hard work - tiny rose buds on each bush.  In another month, I could gather enough roses to fill a vase.  I immediately ordered more rose bushes (Scentimental, Charlotte, Knock-Outs, ButterFly and FlutterBye shrub roses), Phlox, Day Lilies, Hibiscus, and colorful Cannas.  By the following year, I could go out and cut fresh flowers to fill every room in the house.  By the way, I haven't had a manicure since 2003.  I love to feel soil in the palm of my hands!
